1/48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I & Light Utility Car 10HP

The iconic Spitfire fighter was one of the backbones of the RAF in the battle for the skies during WWII, sporting a refined design and aesthetically pleasing elliptical wing, plus the proven Rolls Royce Merlin engine. It first flew in March 1936, and some two and a half years later in August 1938 the first production Spitfires – the Mk.I – started to reach units. This Mk.I would have a vital role to play in the Battle of Britain as the RAF and Luftwaffe played out a titanic struggle for the skies, and the successful fighting off of the Luftwaffe ensured that the Spitfire earned international fame that continues even in the modern day.

During WWII, the British military commissioned various types of civilian pick-up trucks into military service. These “Light Utility Cars” regardless of the make, brand, and year of production were all pressed into service and were thought of affectionately by British personnel. The average “Light Utility Car” was powered by a 30HP motor and could be seen at various fronts. In the latter half of WWII, the Jeep took over the “Light Utility Car’s” frontline responsibilities, but it continued to roll along until the end of the Great War supporting the Allied forces in various roles at airfields and in communication use.
