Athearn Genesis HO SD70M-2, Maine Northern NBSR #6405

Prototype Specific Information

To comply with stricter diesel locomotive emissions standards imposed by EPA Tier II regulations, EMD developed the SD70ACe and SD70M-2 by modifying the SD70MAC. Both models are powered by a 16-cylinder, 4300-horsepower diesel engine.

• SD70M-2: The prime mover drives an alternator, producing AC current that is rectified to DC current, which powers the traction motors.
• SD70ACe: The DC current is further "chopped" back into AC to power the traction motors.

The external design of the SD70M-2 is heavily influenced by the SD90 series locomotives, featuring:

• Full-height nose door and rectangular windshields.
• Large flared radiators with two fans.
• Dynamic brake equipment positioned at the rear of the long hood.
• Inverters relocated to a box on the walkway behind the fireman’s side of the cab.
